Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have some very bad news to share with you. This week Bill Carlsen died. The Carlsen’s after doing really great ministry here in Los Altos moved in November down to Fresno to be nearer to their children. Bill was someone who really took the life of the mind seriously. He was a deeply thoughtful Christian and we’ll all miss his erudition and quiet observations about great thinkers through history.

Our June newsletter has hit the presses. If you know of someone who does not have email and should be on our paper mailing list, or has email and is not on the parish list please be sure to let us know.

Here’s the link for the newsletter:

This Sunday we’ll have both the youth group party and the choir party. We’ll be celebrating various graduates and enjoying the last of John Buenz’s excellent forum series. We are so blessed by his ministry among us. We definitely have to think of a way to persuade him to help us more in the future.

The first of our summer BBQ’s will be this Wednesday (June 15) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Other proposed dates (assuming that there is enough interest) include June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11 and August 25. These are great events in the life of our church.

Here are a few lines from Thomas a Kempis’ Imitation of Christ about the importance of attending to God’s always life-giving Word,

“In the Holy Scriptures, truth is to be looked for rather than fair phrases. All sacred scriptures should be read in the spirit in which they were written. In them, therefore, we should seek food for our souls rather than subtleties of speech, and we should as readily read simple and devout books as those that are lofty and profound. Do not be influenced by the importance of the writer, and whether his learning be great or small, but let the love of pure truth draw you to read. Do not inquire, ‘Who said this?’ but pay attention to what is said.

Men pass away, but the word of the Lord endures forever. God speaks to us in different ways… Ask questions freely, and listen in silence to the words of the Saints; hear with patience the parables of the fathers, for they are not told without good cause.”

May God bless you tonight wherever you are and in whatever struggle or peace this message finds you.

Love,

Malcolm

PS: Earlier this week I sent out an email alerting the congregation about criminal activity in which a person’s email address is effectively taken over. Here’s some more about that issue from Harry Boadwee.

Malcolm,

It sounds like Elisa was the victim of a "phishing"

scam. Here are a couple of general articles that

explain these scams and how to spot them. (I'm a

member of the California Bar's Cyberspace Committee and know

the author of the first article.) The New Yorker article is

particularly frightening.

Policy (California Bar Cyberspace Committee) (pages 39-46).
